Keynote at European Communication Summit
My speech from the summit. No big surprises for long-time followers, but a good summary overall, I guess. Also, I wear a suit!

Nice presentation! What is your process to come up with visualisation ideas? Do they just “happen” or do you have a (more or less) routine?

Thanks! Well, it is usually a longer process of sketching ideas and visuals and exploring the data from many angles. In the beginning, I use a lot of generic tools like Gephi or Tableau, and as the project progresses, my visuals become more and more custom to the purpose at hand. I talked a bit more about process in these two talks: https://vimeo.com/28443920 and https://vimeo.com/21804808 (German..)

Thank you, Moritz, for your suggestions! I was not aware of general visualisation tools like Gephi.
Do you sometimes see yourself as an artist? Some installations have this “art-feel”. And the Stadtbilder — even though they are based on data — present your personal interpretation of these data. Choosing a different colour scheme would evoke different associations (especially the printed version without a possible map overlay).
The Twitter installation is operated only by a knob and is not very usable, when compared to a fulltext indexed database. Is this art for you?

Sure, the emoto sculpture and the Stadtbilder series are explicitly data art works. I would, however, argue that the sculpture is actually much more usable than a “fulltext indexed database” when it comes to identifying patterns and the big picture.
