maybe check out: A.C.I.D. http://interactiondesign.com.au/ in Brisbane, Australia… I have a friend: Marcos Caceres, http://datadriven.com.au who is finishing his PhD there at the moment. However, he is living in Europe and working from wherever he finds himself. …and they have given him a lot of lattitude, (he’s basically writing up the Widget 1.0 spec for WC3, and that’s the PhD!) — Prior to that he did his Honors at the ‘Semantic Media Interfaces Group’ in Holland: http://www.cwi.nl/en/InteractiveInformationAccess

I think A.C.I.D. would be interested to talk to you.

Maybe you would consider Typography & Graphic Communication at The University of Reading (UK)? Information design is very strong there, with many good supervisors. Get in touch with Rob Waller and/or Paul Stiff.

There is a PhD in Industrial Design and Multimedia communication in Milan, Italy. The Communication Design Research Unit has a strong focus on interface/visualization from a design perspective ( cf. http://www.politecalab.org/densitydesign http://www.vimeo.com/1164911 )
