Moritz,

maybe check out: A.C.I.D. http://interactiondesign.com.au/ in Brisbane, Australia...
I have a friend: Marcos Caceres, http://datadriven.com.au
who is finishing his PhD there at the moment. However, he is living in Europe and working from wherever he finds himself.
...and they have given him a lot of lattitude, (he's basically writing up the Widget 1.0 spec for WC3, and that's the PhD!) - Prior to that he did his Honors at the 'Semantic Media Interfaces Group' in Holland: http://www.cwi.nl/en/InteractiveInformationAccess

I think A.C.I.D. would be interested to talk to you.

(PS... I would also like to chat to you about a new tag-based semantic interface project we are developing... I think we could really use your brain)

Maybe you would consider Typography & Graphic Communication at The University of Reading (UK)? Information design is very strong there, with many good supervisors. Get in touch with Rob Waller and/or Paul Stiff.

Check it out here: http://www.rdg.ac.uk/typography/

Some of PhD topics can be found here: http://www.rdg.ac.uk/typography/pg-research/typ-pgropportunities.asp

good luck!

Older information on "Schools that teach about info design" may help you think about the many related departments that may house info-viz sorts:

I am working under the advisory of Dr. John Stasko at Georgia Tech (Atlanta, Georgia, USA). He is a good advisor even though his focus is more on sensemaking and gaining insight in the context of intelligence / homeland security.
